Chthon., Anthony, Piers
12 Anthony, PiersChthon. 41378
Panther: London. 1972.
First British edition (& 1st printing).
Paperback original.
SF novel. The author's first book, a 1967 Nebula and 1968 Hugo nominee.

''he has written large amounts of both sf and fantasy; though there is no clear demarcation, it is certainly the case that he has more and more concentrated his energies on the latter form. His two most ambitious sf novels came early in his career. CHTHON (1967), his first, is a complexly structured adventure of self-discovery partially set in a vast Underground Prison, and making ambitious though sometimes over-baroque use of Pastoral and other parallels; its sequel, Phthor (1975), is less far-reaching, less irritating, but also less involving'' (John Clute & David Langford/Encyclopedia of SF, 3rd Edition).

''US digest anthology, 18 volumes, quarterly, 1947 - 1952, published by Avon Publishing, New York; ed Donald A. Wollheim. AVON FANTASY READER was the first regular paperback reprint fantasy anthology series, though its digest format has often caused it to be classified as a magazine Wollheim selected primarily from WEIRD TALES, emphasizing the works of H.P. LOVECRAFT and CLARK ASHTON SMITH, and working in tandem with August W. Derleth at ARKHAM HOUSE to promote the best of Weird Tales's authors. Wollheim also reprinted stories from STRANGE TALES, Adventure and Blue Book, selecting fiction otherwise hard to find, but did not confine himself to the pulps, presenting a wide range of fiction from books, especially by UK authors like Algernon Blackwood, Lord Dunsany and William Hope Hodgson. Although AVON FANTASY READER published some sf, most of its content was supernatural fiction, plus some slick fantasy and heroic fantasy. The quality was high throughout'' (Mike Ashley/Encyclopedia of Fantasy).

Paperback original.
First published in 1909. Vol 20 in the Dennis Wheatley Library Of The Occult series published by Sphere Books in the mid 1970s, with a new introduction by series editor Dennis Wheatley.

''(1871-1914) UK writer, younger brother of A.C. Benson and E.F. Benson, and the most overtly religious of the three - their father, Edward White Benson (1829-1896) was Archbishop of Canterbury. The stories assembled in The Light Invisible (1903), published in the year he converted to Roman Catholicism, utilize supernatural devices for homiletic purposes, as does the sequence of Club Stories assembled in A Mirror of Shalott, Composed of Tales Told at a Symposium (coll 1907; cut 1907 US). More impressively, THE NECROMANCERS (1909) treats spiritualismas a form of necromancy through the story of a young Roman Catholic convert who almost loses his soul when he communicates with the spirit of his dead fiancée'' (John Clute/Encyclopedia of Fantasy).
