Letters To Arkham: The Letters Of Ramsey Campbell And August Derleth, 1961-1971., Joshi, S. T. (ed.)
5 Joshi, S. T. (ed.)Letters To Arkham: The Letters Of Ramsey Campbell And August Derleth, 1961-1971. 43052
PS Publishing: Harrogate. 2014.
First edition (& 1st printing).
Hardcover.
420 pages.

''August Derleth was the proprietor of the leading small press in weird fiction, Arkham House, based on Sauk City, Wisconsin. In early 1961 he received a letter from one J. Ramsey Campbell, asking some questions about the author that was then the focus of both their lives, H. P. Lovecraft. Soon thereafter, Campbell sent Derleth some of his early Lovecraftian tales, and Derleth quickly saw that a dynamic new writer of Lovecraft's 'Cthulhu Mythos' had emerged. Only months later did Campbell tell Derleth that he was only fifteen years old. In the decade that followed, Derleth issued Campbell's first book, The Inhabitant of the Lake and Less Welcome Tenants (1964), published several of Campbell's stories in his anthologies, and accepted Campbell's second book, Demons by Daylight, published two years after Derleth's unexpected death in 1971. In the course of their intense correspondence, the two writers debated a wide variety of topics-Lovecraft, Arkham House, weird fiction, and in particular the many films that both of them enjoyed. Derleth helped Campbell to obtain works by Henry Miller and others that were banned in England, and the two also discussed delicate issues of romance, marriage, and sexuality. In this lively exchange of letters, we see Derleth becoming a valued mentor to the young Campbell, who would go on to become a towering figure in weird fiction''.

30 Lovecraft, H. P. (ed. Mara Kirk Hart & S. T. Joshi)Lovecraft's New York Circle: The Kalem Club, 1924-1927. 18918
Hippocampus Press: NY. 2006.
First edition (& 1st printing).
Trade paperback original.
During H. P. Lovecraft's residence in New York City, his social and literary life centered upon a group of friends collectively known as the Kalem Club, so named for the initials of the surnames of original members--K, L, or M. Gatherings or meetings were frequently held in members’ homes, and particularly in Manhattan’s Chelsea district, for it was there that Lovecraft’s friend George Kirk lived, and where, in the building HPL utilized as the setting of 'Cool Air' Kirk operated his Chelsea Book Shop. From August 1924 until March 1927, George Kirk wrote almost daily to his fiancee in Cleveland, revealing many details of his interactions with the other Kalems. After nearly seventy years, the letters were discovered by Kirk’s daughter Mara Kirk Hart, who used portions of them as the basis for her fascinating chronicle of the Kalem Club, 'Walkers in the City'. Now expanding greatly upon that earlier work, she and S. T. Joshi have here assembled all the letters of George Kirk that relate information about the Kalem members and their activities during this time, together with representative writings of all the Kalem members during their most active and fruitful period.

Hippocampus Press: NY. 2013.
First edition (& 1st printing).
Trade paperback originals.
Two volumes: 880 pages in total. In the first volume, Lovecraft’s relations to one of his most prominent colleagues and disciples, August Derleth (1909-1971), are recounted in the hundreds of letters they exchanged beginning in 1926. The youthful Derleth first wrote to Lovecraft, via Weird Tales magazine, in regard to an obscure work of weird fiction, and their subsequent correspondence deals extensively with the history of weird fiction, the two authors’ ongoing attempts to publish stories in pulp magazines, Derleth’s evolution into a sensitive writer of regional fiction and of detective stories, and debates over such issues as spiritualism, occultism, the literary use of coincidence, points of language and style, and other matters. Especially noteworthy are several letters by Lovecraft that Derleth interpreted as giving him permission to elaborate upon Lovecraft’s pseudomythology, which Derleth named the Cthulhu Mythos. In the second volume, Lovecraft and Derleth - now noted luminaries in Weird Tales and the world of pulp magazines - continue to write letters on an almost weekly basis. Lovecraft, however, is plagued with self-doubt as a result of the rejection of At the Mountains of Madness by Weird Tales and other professional setbacks. Meanwhile, Derleth is beginning to make a name for himself in the realm of detective fiction with the creation of Solar Pons; he has also begun sensitive mainstream writing that is finding placement in prestigious little magazines of the period. Derleth himself surreptitiously submitted Lovecraft’s The Shadow over Innsmouth and The Dreams in the Witch House to Weird Tales; the former was rejected, the latter accepted. In all, Lovecraft wrote nearly 400 letters to Derleth, but only about 40 of Derleth’s letters to Lovecraft survive. First published in hardcover in 2008.

Collected Essays Vol 1 (Amateur Journalism)., Lovecraft, H. P. (S. T. Joshi, ed.)
35 Lovecraft, H. P. (S. T. Joshi, ed.)Collected Essays Vol 1 (Amateur Journalism). 13101
Hippocampus Press: NY. 2004.
First edition (& 1st printing).
Hardcover.
Discovering the amateur press in 1914, Lovecraft immediately flooded the many small papers of his friends and colleagues with contributions discussing the nature, purpose, and future of amateur journalism. He also edited his own magazine, The Conservative (1915-23), filling it with additional essays. In these articles Lovecraft discusses the conflict between the United and the National Amateur Press Associations; the halcyon days of the amateur movement (1885-95); and the needs and betterment of the amateur cause. We read of Lovecraft's bitter feuds with his fellow amateurs; his exhaustive critiques of their writing; and, most poignant of all, his touching affirmation of What Amateurdom and I Have Done for Each Other, in which he concludes simply: What Amateur Journalism has given me is life itself. 440 pages.

Hippocampus Press: NY. 2006.
First hardcover edition (& 1st printing).
Hardcover.
Volume 3. A self-proclaimed ''mechanistic materialist,'' Lovecraft took an unremittingly scientific view of reality. This perspective informed the whole of his literary output, but is nowhere so clearly seen as in this assemblage of his writings on science. Beginning with the scientific journals, treatises and astronomy columns of his early years, and continuing throughout his life, these writings illuminate Lovecraft's thought in a unique, and until now, largely unappreciated way. As a bonus, almost two-dozen of HPL's hand lettered star maps are reproduced. 358 pages.

Volume 4. Far from being a recluse, H. P. Lovecraft traveled widely -- ranging as far north as Quebec, as far south as Florida and Louisiana, and as far west as Ohio. He wrote interestingly and at length about these expeditions. Collected here are all his formal travelogues, including ''Vermont - A First Impression'' (1927), ''Observations on Several Parts of America'' (1928), ''Travels in the Provinces of America'' (1929), and ''An Account of a Visit to Charleston'' (1930). Also included is ''A Description of the Town of Quebeck, in New France, Lately Added to His Britannick Majesty's Dominions,'' which, at 75,000 words, was Lovecraft's longest work. As a bonus, all of Lovecraft's hand-drawn maps and illustrations of the regions he visited are reproduced. This hardcover edition was issued a few weeks after the paperback edition.
