Laser Books: Ontario. 1976.
First edition (& 1st printing).
Paperback original.
Laser 36. SF novel.

''Canadian sf imprint initiated in 1975 by Harlequin Books, the US publisher of Mills & Boon romances, under the editorship of Roger Elwood. The books were restricted to a formula which specified a male protagonist, an upbeat ending, no sex or atheism, and a minimum of long words. All Laser Book covers were the work of Frank Kelly Freas. The series was suspended early in 1977 after fifty-seven books had appeared. The Laser formula made it unlikely that books of any literary quality would be published, but some were interesting, including K W Jeter's debut, Seeklight (1975), Ray Nelson's Blake's Progress (1975; rev vt Timequest 1985) and Tim Powers's first two novels, The Skies Discrowned (1976) and Epitaph in Rust (1976)'' (Malcolm J. Edwards/Encyclopedia of SF, 3rd Edition).

Victor Gollancz: London. 1972.
First edition (& 1st printing).
Uncorrected book proof (trade paperback).
SF novel.

''(1907-1989) UK writer, granddaughter of George du Maurier, famous (against her will: she thought of herself as an author of psychological studies without genre taint) for dark-hued romances like her most famous tale, Rebecca (1938) - usually set in Cornwall and often - like her first, The Loving Spirit (1931), a ghost story - tinged with the supernatural. There is a hauntedness about her life and work - a sense that very deep issues of gender tormented her personally while at the same time they enabled her work, which is full of intimate, role-threatening doubles - that at times evokes the life and work of James Tiptree Jr. Her interest in genre work was as a consequence obscure, though she does gesture towards an sf explanation of the Timeslip in The House on the Strand (1969), for it is drugs that send its contemporary protagonist into medieval Cornwall. Her worst book, and her one genuine sf novel, RULE BRITTANIA (1972), subjects a Near-Future Cornwall to US Invasion, during which the natives rebel against the tasteless Yankees'' (John Clute/Encyclopedia of SF, 3rd Edition).

Two items. Ace #77793-7. Originally published as a Gold Medal paperback original in 1961 under the title ROCKABILLY, and later reissued as a Pyramid paperback in 1975 with textul revisions and new author's note, this new July 1982 Ace edition follows the Pyramid text (with the author's note). However this Ace edition was suppressed immediately after publication due to a dispute between the author and publisher over the back cover photo (meant to be colour bur printed as black and white). Also this edition states ''Ace Science Fiction'' on the spine, and this was changed for all subsequent editions to read simply ''Fiction''. This 1982 Ace edition is being sold together with the correct 1983 Ace edition (Ace #77795-3) which has both the colour photograph on the back cover and the correct (''Fiction'') wording on the bottom of the spine. Also incidentally the cover artist (Barclay Shaw) is credited on the 1983 paperback (he was not credited on the 1982 printing).
