Fantastic Voyage 11: Destination Brain., Asimov, Isaac
158 Asimov, IsaacFantastic Voyage 11: Destination Brain. 23322
Doubleday: NY. 1987.
First edition.
Hardcover.
SF novel, sequel to FANTASTIC VOYAGE (1966).

''twenty-one years ago when the movie FANTASTIC VOYAGE was released, Asimov was hired to do the novelization. The book was successful but, to Asimov, not satisfying, for ``I never felt it to be entirely mine.'' Now he has rewritten it his way, and it's good. The story concerns Albert Jonas Morrison, a 21st century neurophysicist, and otherwise an ordinary and unheroic man, who is kidnapped and taken to the Soviet Union. A major Soviet scientist, Pyotr Shapirov, is in an irreversible coma, and Morrison's special expertise could be of value. The Soviets believe that Morrison may be able to apply his controversial theories to retrieve vagrant thoughts that still may be floating in Shapirov's damaged brain and so provide clues to important work in which Shapirov was engaged. Morrison goes cold with fear because the plan calls for him to be miniaturized along with four Soviet scientiststo sub-molecular size, introducing them into Shapirov's body and, ultimately, into his brain. The snappish relationships between the scientists is wryly depicted, and the mission itself makes fascinating reading as both an actionadventure and an intellectually stimulating premise'' (Publishers Weekly).

189 Atkins, PeterMorningstar, or The Vampires Of Summer. 15691
HarperCollins: London. 1992.
First edition (& 1st printing).
Hardcover.
The author's first novel. Vampires.

''the best first novel I've read in a long time: an audacious and heady mixture of vampires, ghosts, goddesses and psychopaths'' (Neil Gaiman). ''Atkins's background as a writer of artistic splatter movies - he worked on the first Wishmaster film and three Hellraiser films--is obvious in this fast-paced horror-suspense novel, first published in the U.K. in 1992. A serial killer who signs the word Morningstar in the blood of his decapitated victims is stalking the streets of San Francisco. Donovan Moon, a flat-broke freelance journalist, gets a tip from a friend that Morningstar's crimes are marked by one other notable detail: his victims are all staked through the heart, killed as legend says vampires must be slain. A fortuitous phone call takes Moon to the penthouse apartment of Jonathan Frost, highly respected real estate developer--who also claims to be Morningstar, aka Matador (the Spanish for ''slayer''). Frost dreams of a hunter on his trail, and fears he will not survive their meeting. He offers Moon $50,000 to write his life story if he dies'' (Publishers Weekly).

SF novel.

'' sf novel whose plot and pacing initially remind one of an early Keith Laumer adventure, but which expands upon and darkens its origins in space opera; the protagonist, after a millennium of cryonicsleep, awakens into an extremely complex and cruel world run by AIs, where he is used for pornography and enslaved before his eventual rescue. It could not be said that AAA is a tempered writer; but the splurge and dance of his prose can be, at times, enormously enlivening'' (John Clute/Encyclopedia of SF).

196 Attanasio, A. A.The Dragon And The Unicorn. 04979
Hodder & Stoughton: London. 1994.
First edition (& 1st printing).
Hardcover.
First volume in an Arthurian fantasy series: followed by ARTHOR and THE PERILOUS ORDER. Preceded the US edition by over two years.

''with THE DRAGON AND THE UNICORN (1994 UK) and Arthor (1995) he began an ambitious Arthurian sequence: the first volume presents a complex cosmogony in which the unicorn - a noncorporeal creature of the sun - takes on bodily form only when caught in bondage to the Earth. The figure of Merlin gradually emerges as an avatar of a spirit or demon immemorially appalled by matter. The second volume, which focuses on ''Arthor'', is bound more explicitly to traditional Arthurian material, though Arthor himself is an unusually brutal figure. Morgeu enters the picture, and there is much adversarial magic, with Merlin opposing her. A florid quest-like urgency permeates all of the author's work; indeed, most of his protagonists are themselves driven by quest imperatives, usually the need to discover their own identities. The wide range of his work may have kept him from wide fame within the field, as may an erratic style (eloquence and bathos frequently abut within single paragraphs); there remains, however, a sense that this rich variousness will, sooner or later, become fully recognized'' (John Clute/Encyclopedia Of Fantasy).

Fantasy/sf novel.

''his novels are generally sf - he is best-known for the Radix Tetrad sequence beginning with Radix (1981) - but the exorbitant intensity of his rendering of the visible world brings them at times close to magic realism. Set mostly in the South Pacific in the early 17th century, WYVERN (1988), which is fantasy, follows the rite of passage into adulthood of a blond Tarzan-like enfant sauvage whom the ''natives'' of Borneo think is a demon and who is raised by a soul-catcher sorcerer to fulfil prophecies; in the event he becomes a pirate, shifting en passant from the realm of fantasy to the realm of historical romance'' (John Clute/Encyclopedia of SF).
