Dreads And Drolls., Machen, Arthur
255 Machen, ArthurDreads And Drolls. 21423
Tartarus Press: North Yorkshire. 2007.
First edition (& 1st printing).
Hardcover.
This volume contains sixty studies, mostly from real life, each of which, by its capacity for inspiring terror or causing amused wonder, qualifies as the 'Dread' or 'Droll' of Arthur Machen's general heading. 'To be able so to tell the bare truth that it seems a magnificent lie' is the qualification which has attracted Machen to the most outstanding of his narrations. When Dreads and Drolls was first published in 1926 it contained twenty-nine articles reprinted from London's The Graphic. This new edition more than doubles that number by including all of his contributions from that magazine. To 'The Euston Square Mystery', 'The Adventure of the Long-Lost Brother' and others we have been able to add 'A Castle in Celtic Myths', 'A Pretty Parricide', 'One Night When I Was Frightened' and many more. There is a tendency towards the re-telling of notable eighteenth-century crimes among these 'Dreads' and 'Drolls', but Machen also manages to illuminate such a wide range of subjects as the Holy Grail, the 'Little People' and cookery. In this entertaining and diverse collection of essays, Machen manages to show how little human nature has changed through the centuries. 300 copies printed.

First edition thus (& 1st printing).
Hardcover.
A collection of essays, mystically poetic fragments, and supernatural tales, first published by Rich & Cowan: London in 1936. This new edition adds a 14-page introduction by James Machin.

''a collection of Arthur Machen’s short stories curated by John Gawsworth (aka Fytton Armstrong) in 1936. As well as exhuming some very early tales published in the first half of the 1890s, Gawsworth included Machen’s decadent prose poems from Ornaments in Jade, and later work commissioned by Lady Cynthia Asquith for collections such as The Ghost Book (1926) and Shudders (1929). Among other curious items, The Cosy Room collected ‘The Islington Mystery’, an account of the likely murder of a taxidermist’s wife by her husband; but the highlight of the collection is ‘N’, the only original contribution to The Cosy Room, and perhaps the most interesting and thought-provoking story of Arthur Machen’s later career - a distillation of many ideas he had previously explored, but they are perhaps more perfectly expressed in this tale than in any other''.

The London Adventure, Or The Art Of Wandering., Machen, Arthur
260 Machen, ArthurThe London Adventure, Or The Art Of Wandering. 43034
Tartarus Press: North Yorkshire. 2017.
First edition thus (& 1st printing).
Hardcover.
Expanded contents. First published in 1924, The London Adventure is often considered to be Arthur Machen’s third volume of autobiography, but its alternative title, The Art of Wandering, differentiates it from Far Off Things and Things Near and Far. The term ‘wandering’ refers not only to Machen’s many and various journeys around the unconsidered byways of London, but also to the curiously meandering construction of the book. Machen plays a fine game with the reader, discussing what his book might be about, how he should begin it and where it might end. The result is a curiously up-to-date psychogeographical manifesto, written, as always, in the author’s beautiful prose. Added to the original text of The London Adventure are a number of essays, several uncollected, which inform and illustrate Machen’s contention that, ‘All the wonders lie within a stone’s-throw of King’s Cross Station.’ 232 pages.

Hardcover.
Cthulhu Mythos novel. LIMITED EDITION: 100 numbered copies signed by the author and illustrator and slipcased

''the specialty press of Fedogan & Bremer brings out the sort of books that H P Lovecraft might be writing were he alive today. Adam Niswander, author of previous novels in a series called the Shaman Cycle (The Charm, The Serpent Slayers, The Hound Hunters), is a worthy heir to Lovecraft: instead of writing mere pastiche, he explores new settings and viewpoints for the Cthulhu Mythos. The Sand Dwellers will please fans of Brian Lumley's elaborations on the Mythos (there are some allusions to The Burrowers Beneath), but it isn't necessary to have read Lumley to enjoy this rollicking tale. Like Lumley, and other horror masters such as Stephen King, Niswander makes use of a point of view that shifts from section to section, building suspense by giving the reader a series of limited snapshots of the proceedings. The novel, set in Niswander's home stomping ground of the American Southwest, interweaves several subplots for a complex but effective hybrid between horror and espionage. Lovecraftian images--unnatural fog, weird mutants, and nasty subterranean creatures plotting to destroy the world--are combined with a secret military installation, a natty private detective, a strong-willed woman, the history of an old mine, and more. And as horror critic Stefan Dziemianowicz writes, ''in contrast to its Lovecraftian models, The Sand Dwellers is a novel in which human interests and concerns do have significance, and moral choices are still possible despite the cosmic horrors that mock them.'''' (Fiona Webster).

Hardcover.
The strange tale is alive and well and flourishing at the beginning of the twenty-first century. These seventeen brand new stories, representing the very best of contemporary weirdness, range from the mythical terror of Adam Golaski's 'The Great Blind God Passing Through Us', to John Gaskin's assured ghost story, 'Party Talk', in which an elderly lady tells her disturbing tale. Circus folk take in an abandoned girl with unforeseen consequences in Nina Allen's Machenian 'The Lammas Worm,'. In 'Countess Otho', Reggie Oliver's actor protagonist finds success after he inherits the manuscript of an unproduced play: but what is the precise cause, and the price, of his new found fame? The curator of a dream museum has an interesting appointment in Mark Valentine's 'Morpheus House', while in 'Her Father's Daughter', Simon Strantzas thoroughly subverts the familiar horror trope of a young woman seeking help at an isolated farmhouse. Limited to 500 hardcover copies.

Weird novella. LIMITED EDITION: 100 numbered hardcover copies.

''in June 1962 an unusual novelty arrives in Baku. This is the roving troupe of Pan Soviet Players from Moscow, their aim to stage a performance of the obscure eighteenth-century play, The Mysterious Mother by Horace Walpole. Among this curious crew of actors, leading lady Petrina Yurebian carries a terrible secret from her girlhood years in the strife-torn enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh. With her is her thirteen-year-old daughter, Marinitsa, a child of outstanding loveliness who draws lustful eyes from the arts interlocutor of the Azerbaijani Supreme Soviet, Alim Ibrahim. He too bears a past from the ravages of Nagorno-Karabakh, a past that reaches further back still – to the opposite side of the continent of Europe. While a mad matinée is performed in Baku, in which simulacra of dead authors intrude, innocent Marinitsa and oleaginous Alim embark on a tour through the city: a tour that Alim intends will culminate in a gorgeously upholstered cellar beneath the warren of interlocking streets that is Icheri Shähär - the castellated ancient city of the caravanserais of the khans. Out of the peril which yawns before Marinitsa comes spiritual reclamation at a price. Forty-eight years further on, the aged representative of a religious community in Ireland journeys to Baku in quest of Petrina Yurebian, who has since died. His mission to follow the trail of a predatory renegade from the order who had fled in the 1940s. The fleer had been Liam O Briain but the same man was known to have been known to the Pan Soviet Players as Alim Ibrahim of Baku. Instead of Petrina, the elderly brother meets Marinitsa, now sixty-one years old, and alone, from whom he learns the terrible tale of the blight of her life and of her mother’s life: a tale that conceals, like a sleek spider at its heart, a treacherous lecherous interlocutor - named Alim Ibrahim''.
