De Danann Press: Dublin, Ireland. 1985.
First edition (& 1st printing).

Illustrated throughout in colour (with text) by the artist: introduction by Andrew M. Greeley. Uncommon.

''self-taught Irish artist and illustrator, mainly of Celtic mythology. He works in a strong outline with some linear modelling, coloured with transparent and opaque watercolour; his pages are richly embellished in the manner of medieval Celtic manuscript decoration. He worked in advertising before producing and publishing a series of drawings entitled Celtia (graph coll 1974); one of these, ''Morrigan'', was purchased by the Victoria & Albert Museum. This success led to the publication of these drawings in book form along with further pieces under the title Jim Fitzpatrick: Celtia (graph coll 1975), which in turn led to the creation of his three-volume illustrated retelling of the folktales, myths and battle sagas of the Tuatha Dé Danann: The Book of Conquests (graph 1978 UK), The Silver Arm (graph 1981 UK) and Son of the Sun (graph 1987).'' 87 GREEN ARROW, (Mile Grell)Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters: all three issues published. 42842
DC Comics: NY. 1987.
First edition.
Comics.
All three issues published (glossy, colour throughout) of comic book miniseries published in 1987 by DC Comics, written and drawn by Mike Grell, and featuring the character Green Arrow. This mini-series heralded the relaunch of the GREEN LANTERN character in a new series.

''in 1987, DC Comics launched the character into a new ongoing title as part of their mature audience comic line. Written and illustrated by Mike Grell, the revamp was launched with GREEN ARROW: THE LONGBOW HUNTERS mini-series. In this three-issue prestige format limited series, a routine adventure against a group of drug runners led to tragedy as the Black Canary was captured and brutally tortured. In response, Oliver murders his girlfriend's attackers. The mini-series would also introduce the enigmatic female Japanese archer, Shado, whose family had suffered in a World War II internment camp. Shado would later rape Oliver and become pregnant by him, producing a son named Robert after his father''. So not many laughs per issue, I would guess.

''The Rime of the Modern Mariner is a recasting of Coleridge's famous poem - now, though, the fantastical voyage is one of environmental disaster. Stranded in the North Pacific Gyre - a vast, hypoxic maelstrom of plastic waste - the mariner comes face to face with the consequences of man's excessive consumption - in the form of wrathful gods, petroleum slicks and tsunamis, ghostly apparitions, and the great endangered creatures of the deep''.

''Glossy bedsheet-size US colour comic-strip magazine inspired by the French magazine METAL HURLANT and reprinting English-language versions of mainly sf and fantasy material from this and other French, Italian and Spanish sources alongside similar matter by select US contributors. Published monthly Apr 1977 - Dec 1985, quarterly from the Winter (i.e., January) 1986 issue and then bimonthly from Mar 1989, Heavy Metal has built a reputation for high quality in both presentation and content. Monthly issues carried serialized material in episodes of varying length, causing an often uncomfortable segmentation of some stories. The list of contributors reads like a roster of the world's best artists and writers of comic-strip sf, and the following is only a selection: Enki Bilal, Vaughn Bode, Caza, Howard V. Chaykin, Richard Corben, Guido Crepax, Philippe Druillet, Fernando Fernandez, Juan Giminez, Jean Giraud (Moebius), Jeff Jones, Rod Kierkegaard, Tanino Liberatore, Milo Manara, Georges Pichard, Jose Ribera, Aleuteri Serpieri, Jacques Tardi, Daniel Torres and Berni Wrightson'' (Ron Tiner/Encyclopedia of SF).
