Foundations Of Science Fiction: A Study In Imagination And Evolution., Pierce, John J.
514 Pierce, John J.Foundations Of Science Fiction: A Study In Imagination And Evolution. 36825
Greenwich Book Publishers: NY. 1987.
First edition (& 1st printing).
Hardcover.
290 pages.

''US editor and critic, son of John R Pierce, with a background in Fandom, editor of a Fanzine, Renaissance, in the 1960s, and at that time author of reasoned polemical articles about the damage he saw being wrought on sf by writers of the New Wave. Pierce edited Galaxy November 1977-March/April 1979, years in which through no special fault of his the magazine was rapidly declining. Later he published an ambitious sequence of critical books about sf, A Study in Imagination and Evolution, which together form a kind of History of SF: Foundations of Science Fiction: A Study in Imagination and Evolution (1987), which deals mostly with Proto SF, Great Themes of Science Fiction: A Study in Imagination and Evolution (1987), When World Views Collide (1989) and Odd Genre: A Study in Imagination and Evolution (1994). These may deserve more discussion than they appear to have received. Pierce's prose is accessible and the books are well organized, but their ideology is deeply conservative in the sense that he vies non-genre SF as effectively not sf at all, though his focus - here and elsewhere - on writers like Lois McMaster Bujold, Kim Stanley Robinson, Cordwainer Smith and Robert Charles Wilson demonstrates the intelligence behind the sequence's strong bias toward Hard SF; his advocacy of the different ways in which sf has invented the future is intelligent and measured. Much of the analysis is thematic, some philosophical; his view of the evolution of sf incorporates a sometimes explicit assumption of progress: as a tree with evolving branches'' (Peter Nicholls & John Clute/Encyclopedia of SF, 3rd Edition).

Stapled pictorial wrappers.
Vol 6 no 2 (April 1974) issue (whole no 22). 35 issues of this sf fanzine were published between 1964 - 1995. Articles, essays, reviews etc, including poetry. Octavo, single issue, pictorial wrappers, stapled.

''RIVERSIDE QUARTERLY was a distinct break from the relatively relaxed genzine (general topics magazine) Inside subscribers were used to. Finally, in the third issue, Sapiro included an editorial note explaining that his choice of title and policy was intended 'to emulate the Hudson Review, possibly the best literary magazine, and perform the same office for fantasy and science fiction that the Hudson Review does for literature in general. Like its model, RIVERSIDE QUARTERLY publishes fiction and poetry as well as critical essays and reviews. It was the most academic of the 60s fanzines, and Sapiro drew as much criticism for the formality of his writing as he did praise for his exacting dedication. The magazine is notable for its willingness to serialize long essays over several issues. Always a struggling publication, it resumed publication in 1977 after a several-year lapse'' (Tymn and Ashley(eds. Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Weird Fiction Magazines, pp. 834-35).

545 RIVERSIDE QUARTERLY (ed. Leland Sapiro),Riverside Quarterly Vol 8 no 4. 32923
1991 (August).
First edition (& 1st printing).
Stapled pictorial wrappers.
Vol 8 no 4 (whole no 32). 35 issues of this sf fanzine were published between 1964 - 1995. Articles, essays, reviews, plus (in this issue anyway) some sf poetry.

''sf fanzine (began 1964) edited by Leland Sapiro from Canada and the USA. Riverside Quarterly began as a retitled continuation of the fanzine Inside (1953-63), published by Ron Smith and then Jon White, which won a Hugo in 1956 and itself incorporated a still earlier fanzine, Fantasy Advertiser, later known as Science Fiction Advertiser (1946-54). Riverside Quarterly quickly formed a quite different character of its own, academic essays on sf and fantasy being its main content. Alexei Panshin originally published the major part of his Heinlein in Dimension (1968) in Riverside Quarterly; other contributors have included James Blish, Algis Budrys and Jack Williamson. Though irregular, this is one of the longest-running - as well as the most serious - of all fanzines'' (Peter Nicholls & Peter Roberts/Encyclopedia of SF).
