''an alien race contacts earth and declares that they travel the universe and explore lifeforms. They make an offer: anyone interested is welcome to travel with them. The novel starts just after thousands of humans who have accepted the offer are beamed onboard a spacecraft. They soon realise that everything electronical does not work. In this naked state, in terms of technology, they have to organise to survive, wondering who and where the aliens are. The alien spacecraft is, in a sense, a gigantic petri dish, and thus the story deals more with human relations under primitive conditions. Right under the surface of the story is a ''Lord of the flies'' theme exploring human nature, with a particular focus on our capacity for distrust and evil''.
