1 Benson, Arthur ChristopherThe Isles Of Sunset. 40520
Ibister & Co.: London. 1904.
First edition (& 1st printing).
Octavo, pp. [1-12] [1-3] 4-307 [308: blank] [note: first leaf is a blank], title page printed in red and black, original pictorial blue cloth, front panel stamped in black, gray, yellow and white, spine panel stamped in gold, fore and bottom edges untrimmed. Benson's second collection of short fiction, preceded by THE HILL OF TROUBLE AND OTHER STORIES (1903). Includes two supernatural tales, ''The Slype House'' and ''The Waving of the Sword,'' the latter more mystical than macabre. A very uncommon book.

''(1862-1925) UK essayist, journal-keeper and writer of some fiction; elder brother of E.F. Benson and Robert Hugh Benson. Much closer to M.R. James than to either brother, he can be considered a member of the James Gang because of the academic, antiquarian tone of his stories. The most notable are collected in The Hill of Trouble and Other Stories (1903) and THE ISLES OF SUNSET (1904), both assembled as Paul the Minstrel and Other Stories (1911); it is also possible that he was the ''B'' who wrote several ghost stories in the same mode, set in typical college surroundings; the best are assembled as When the Door is Shut (1986). The two novellas under his own name collected in Basil Netherby (1926) display a similar aspiring wistfulness, a precarious indecision about the advisability of penetrating Thresholds into the antique-visaged unknown. The Child of the Dawn (1912) is a mild-mannered utopia'' (John Clute/Encyclopedia of Fantasy).

Bookplate on front pastedown, gift inscription on verso of front free endpaper, some browning/spotting to endpapers and preliminary and terminal pages, a VG+ copy with bright cover illustration and white lettering, bright gold lettering on spine, tight inner hinges and clean interior.
