''UK writer and teacher (1894-1963) who wrote also as Burgess Drake. He spent several years teaching English at universities in Japan, Korea and China, the latter being the setting of his most successful novel, Chinese White (1950). His early The Remedy (1925; vt The Shadowy Thing 1928 US) deals with malevolent spiritualism, possession and the release of a tortured soul. HUSH-A-BY-BABY (1952) is a ghost story about a woman haunted by the poltergeist spirits of her unborn twins who died during a miscarriage; this novel was dedicated to his friends Maeve and Mervyn Peake, who illustrated Drake's fantasy The Book of Lyonne (1952) and his short story about a Korean ghostly monster, ''Yak Mool San'' (1949)'' (Richard Dalby/Encyclopedia of Fantasy)
