First published by Faber in 1966. Collects ten sf stories, including the title 74-page story ''The Saliva Tree'' (a homage to both H. G. Wells and H. P. Lovecraft), winner of the 1965 Nebula award for best novella. This Gregg Press edition (''First printing, January 1981) on the copyright page) has a new eight-page introduction by Peter Nicholls. This copy is from the author's own library, with a white printed label signed by Wendy Aldiss affixed to the rear pastedown, stating/''This book was a personal copy of the author Brian W. Aldiss, part of his effects at his home at the time of his death in August 2017. Wendy Aldiss, Literary Executor Brian Aldiss Estate''. A very uncommon edition.

''the novella The Saliva Tree (September 1965 F&SF) won a Nebula and was included in The Saliva Tree and Other Strange Growths (1966). It complexly fits an entertaining tribute to H. G. Wells into a plot which homages The Colour Out of Space (September 1927 Amazing) by H P Lovecraft'' (John Clute & Peter Nicholls/Encyclopedia of SF, 3rd Edition).
