Filmed in 1992 by David Cronenberg. ''Printed by S.I.P., Montreuil, France in July 1959'' on p. 227. The Traveller's Companion Series no. 76. The first printing of 5000 copies has a decorative border around the title page, and was issued with a dustjacket (though earliest copies sold did not have one, the dustjacket was added a few weeks after publication): the first printing shows a price of 1,500 Francs printed on the back cover, however after the French franc was devalued on January 1st 1960 unsold copies of the book were stamped with the new price of NF 18 (18 new francs) over the old printed price. This second printing was issued shortly after - without the decorative border and without a dustjacket, and with a new printed price of 18 francs on the back cover - see: Maynard & Miles: William S. Burroughs: A Bibliography 1953-1973,

''Burroughs was immensely influential among the Beat writers of the 1950s notably Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg - and already had an underground reputation before the appearance of his first important book, THE NAKED LUNCH (1959; vt Naked Lunch 1962; vt Naked Lunch: The Restored Text 2001). This nightmarish satire, first published by the daring and influential Olympia Press in Paris, contains large elements of sf - e.g., the dystopias of ''Freeland'' and ''Interzone'', and some outr biological fantasy: grotesque visions of Genetic Engineering as literalizations of social control in what then could be described as the Near Future. Brilliantly written, funny and scatological, it is - the designation is as anomalous as it is merited - a modern classic; an inventive adaptation was filmed as Naked Lunch (1992) by David Cronenberg'' (David Pringle & John Clute/Encyclopedia of SF, 3rd Edition).
